Midnights/子夜

Opening Reception: Thursday, February 2 , 5-8PM
Gallery Hours: By Appointment on Saturdays, 12-3PM.

Specialist presents Midnights/子夜, an exhibition featuring recent works by artist Yongqi Tang.

Like multiple overlaid projections, Yongqi Tang’s large scale drawings evoke movement: animated conversations and intimate exchanges shared over a meal. Drawing on her own background studying and working in China and the United States, Tang uses everyday encounters, both public and private, to explore the fluidity of multiple selves constructed within different cultural and ideological contexts. Her richly layered charcoal drawings and small ceramic reliefs blend allegories, myths, and symbols from both Western and Eastern Classicist traditions, creating a playful in-betweenness within which different identities are performed, made, and re-made.

Yongqi Tang (b.1997, Shenzhen, China) is a Seattle-based artist, and she received her M.F.A from the University of Washington in 2022. Tang currently teaches at University of Washington’s Painting and Drawing department. She is the recipient of the Bernie Funk Artist Scholarship, Boyer and Elizabeth Bole Gonzales Scholarship for Excellence, and the Puget Sound Group of Northwest Artists Scholarship Award. She was an artist in residence at the Field Projects Gallery, NY, and is currently one of the artists in residence at the Amazon 2023 AIR Program. Her works have been featured in Shoutout LA, Al-Tiba 9 Contemporary Art, and Maake Magazine.
